Restored Windows 7 64-bit Partition - Keyboard/Mouse don't register at login screen
  • I backed up my Windows 7 64-bit partition from my 2011 MacBook Air and attempted to restore it to my 2012 MacBook Air using the "free" version of Winclone 2.3 (I just found out about 3.3 today and purchased a copy). It appears to restore as normal, but when I boot into the partition, the login screen comes up, but nothing registers on the keyboard, and the trackpad won't move the mouse pointer.

Oddly, I am able to access the Boot Camp partition through Parallels 7, and can use it as normal. I tried manually installing the new Boot Camp drivers for the keyboard and mouse, but that hasn't helped (I can't install the full package since it detects that it is running on a VM and stops).

I just found out about the new paid version and attempted to reclone the partition. It isn't letting me shrink the filesystem, as it is telling me it is "dirty" or corrupt. I'm guessing this has something to do with it.

    Any ideas, besides reinstalling Windows?
  • I have seen this issue quite a bit, and is common when going between machines. I would try plugging in an external USB keyboard, and removing the old USB drivers. You could also try turning on Remote Desktop when booted into Parallels, then reboot back into the bootcamp. Then remote in and remove and restore the bootcamp drivers.

  • Thanks. I finally got a hold of a USB keyboard and mouse (I needed both). I got it to work, though it was a little trickier than I thought. I manually uninstalled all the old Boot Camp drivers from within Control Panel, and installed the new Boot Camp drivers from a USB key using the setup. That was enough to get the keyboard working. Getting the trackpad to work required going into Device Manager and "removing" all the USB HID devices that I didn't recognize, and searching for new hardware. At that point, it detected the trackpad, and I was able to install the trackpad driver manually from the Windows drivers folder on my USB key. Anyway, I then re-activated Windows, and have it up and running.

As a bonus, the 2012 MacBook Air Boot Camp drivers enable AHCI, so I get TRIM and faster disk speeds in Windows 7, as well as OS X.
  • Thanks for the great info. I'll add it to the FAQs, since I think it will help some folks out.
  • Tried WinCloning from a 2011 MBP to a 2012 RMBP.
Followed all instructions on here: http://twocanoes.com/asset.php?id=9

However, booting into Windows, I have no KB or Trackpad use. External mouse or keyboard doesn't work either when left plugged in.

Any ideas? Previous free version of Winclone worked great when I ran it on SL. I'm surprised a $20 version didn't.
  • You might try uninstalling all the Boot Camp drivers from your 2011 MBP, recloning it, and then restoring it onto the rMBP.
  • I am working on some docs on how to use SysPrep, which should help resolve this type of issue.
